What inspired you to write a romantic novel?

I am quite a relational person and enjoy interacting with individuals. I love to watch romantic movies and often get caught up in the numerous reality tv shows about couples interacting and finding love. I also like to be creative and thought I'd try my hand at writing a romantic novel to see how it would transpire.

What do you think are the key ingredients of a successful romance novel?

I believe it is imperative to have strong characters that individuals can connect with straightaway, so that they can see themselves in the characters, especially if those characters are strong and successful. It is also important to have a steady flow to the storyline, where there are highs and lows, so as to keep your readers on the edge of their seats, wondering what is about to happen next.

What challenges did you encounter while writing this book, and how did you overcome them?

The challenges when writing, whether it is a fiction or nonfiction piece is the discipline aspect of things. Being motivated to say no to everything else in order to work on your manuscript and commit to the deadline that you might have given yourself to finish by. I created a plan that was workable for me and then committed to it. When writing Second Glances, I committed to getting up early in the morning and writing for an hour. I stuck to the plan and eventually achieved my desired result.

What are some common misconceptions about romance novels, and how do you address them in your writing?

I think that some of the common misconceptions about writing a romance novel is that it has to be sordid and full of explicit content. But that depends on what type of writer you are and what values you want to portray in your book. My style of writing will be very different to some of the mainstream writers on the market today. As a Christian, I want the values that I believe in to be interwoven within my characters and storylines, which I believe is still achievable without coming across that I am prudish in any way.

What do you think makes your book stand out from other romantic novels?

I believe what makes my book stand out from other romantic novels are the core values that I adopt and try to bring across At the end of the day, I want my readers to know what are the values and heart of God, and I can achieve this by ensuring that Christian truths are predominantly featured in my novels.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers who are interested in writing romance novels?

I would say, just go for it. You never know what you can achieve until you put pen to paper and start writing. As you let your imagination run wild, you will start to hear the conversations formulating in your head and the story will just develop and evolve from there. And, most importantly, just enjoy the process. After all, It's just make-belief, so you can’t really get it wrong. Have some fun with it and you will surprise yourself with what you are capable of achieving.
